About eBooks

eBooks and ePub defined +

An eBook is an electronic or digital version of a printed book. eBooks can be read on computers, compatible eReading devices, tablets or smartphones.

An ePub (electronic publication) is a free and open eBook standard for “reflowable” content, meaning that the text display can be optimized depending on the device or hardware being used. You can read ePub formatted books on your computer, on many mobile devices, such as iPhone and BlackBerry, and on select eReaders such as the Kobo Reader.

Browsing and purchasing eBooks +

When searching for products on the Whitcoulls website you can search for eBooks and purchase them in much the same way as you would purchase a regular book. You can even purchase eBooks and other items in the same transaction. 'Tangible' products will be posted and your eBooks will be added to your 'My eLibrary' ready for download.

Another way to purchase and read an eBook is by using one of the Whitcoulls FREE eReading applications for PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Blackberry or Android from the applications page. Once installed, you can access Whitcoulls eBook store from inside the application to make purchases and download from your 'My eLibrary'.

Once you have added an eBook to your library it is yours. It is important that you choose carefully, as these files cannot be returned like physical products can.

Free eBooks you select will be added to your 'My eLibrary' instantly and purchased eBooks will be added once you complete the transaction process. The speed with which you can download your eBook will depend on the device you are downloading to, your internet connection and the size of the file. However, you should be able to access your digital book in under 10 minutes.

eBooks and eReading Device Compatibility +

Our eBooks use the ePub standard for content, meaning that you can view them on any ePub compatible device. Most quality eInk eReading devices support ePub, but it is important to check the product information carefully before making a purchase.

For the greatest ease of use, Whitcoulls recommends the Kobo eReader, Whitcoulls' own eInk enabled device, which will sync directly to the Whitcoulls eBook store. You can purchase a Kobo eReader from this website or from selected Whitcoulls stores.

Users of other ePub enabled eInk devices will need to use Adobe Digital Editions. to add content to their device. Please make sure your eInk device works with Adobe Digital Editions before purchasing an eBook from Whitcoulls.

If you are using a different kind of eReader, please see instructions under other eReaders for how to download from your library to your device using Adobe Digital Editions

Printing and copying eBooks +

Depending on their file format, it may be technically possible to print and copy some eBooks. However, even digital forms of books are subject to copyright laws. In addition to legal considerations, eBooks are environmentally friendly in digital form, to print them out may be waste of resources. Should you require something printed, you may achieve a better finished product with minimal time, effort and resources by purchasing the book in its physical form rather than trying to print an eBook.

About the Apps

eReading apps defined +

Whitcoulls offers eReading applications for the most popular smartphones as well as desktop applications for both Mac and PC. These apps allow you to access Whitcoulls’ eBook store to browse, purchase and begin reading eBooks. You can also use these apps to download and read purchases you have made directly from the website.

Smartphones
An app for iPhone is available now. Blackberry and Android apps will be available soon. Visit our Smartphone page for more.

PCs, Macs and iPads
To read eBooks purchased from Whitcoulls on your PC, Mac or iPad you will need to download and install the appropriate application from the PC, Mac & iPad apps page.

Please check the minimum system requirements to run these applications. Mac users will need to run Mac OS 10.5 or a more recent operating system. PC users will need Windows XP (with Service Pack 3 installed) or a more recent operating system.

Generally, meeting these minumum requirements is a simple as an update from Apple (for Mac) or Microsoft (for Windows). An online search will advise on the best way to go about updating your system.

If you have an older system you will still be able to purchase eBooks via the website without using an app but will need to use an alternative to the app to download and read your eBooks such as Adobe Digital Editions.

Using the Apps +

Your library of books is stored elsewhere and only a virtual version is passed to your app when you access it. If you sign out of the app, your library information is maintained at the source but the virtual copy on your app is lost. The virtual copy of your library will need to be reloaded every time you sign in, which can be quite time consuming if you have a lot of books in your library. Our recommendation is that you do not sign out of the app.

Interrupted download to your eReading device +

If your download is interrupted, you will not need to repurchase your book but you must begin the download from your 'My eLibrary' again.

The license type determines whether or not you can share eBooks. Many eBook products sold have a "Single Reader" license. This means only you (and those who you allow to access your library) may view the eBook.

eBooks supporting Reader® Mobile Technology from Adobe Systems can be shared with up to 6 devices authorised to the same account. For more information regarding Adobe Reader® technology, please visit: Reader®Mobile Technology FAQs.

Deleting books from 'My eLibrary' +

Your library is a record of every eBook you have purchased or added from our available titles. It is not currently possible to delete an eBook from your library - this would be akin to throwing a physical book away as once it is deleted, it is gone from your library forever and you would need to purchase it again if you wanted to read it.

The option to delete books from the library may be a feature added in the future.

The Kobo eReader

What is the Kobo eReader? +

The Kobo eReader is an eReading device that uses e-Ink technology. This means that the screen looks like paper and is similar to reading a paper page so there is none of the eyestrain or headaches commonly associated with reading off a backlit screen like a computer monitor. The Kobo eReader has some amazing advantages such as the ability to have more than 1000 books of your choice at your fingertips in a package less than the size of the average paperback!

The Kobo eReader comes with 1GB memory and holds up to 1000 titles, based on an average eBook size of 1MB. You can add more storage (up to 4GB) using the SD Memory card slot. SD High Capacity (SDHC) cards are not supported.

It will last for about 2 weeks (or about 8000 page turns) on a single charge.

Synchronising an App with a Kobo eReader +

Please check the user manual which came with your Kobo eReader for instructions.

The first time you sync your Kobo eReader, a couple of things are happening that take a few minutes.
1.The existing eReader software on the Kobo will be updated with the most recent version.
2. Each of the books in your library will be transfered to the eReader. Each book takes 1-2 minutes, depending on its size. If you have 10 or more books, this will take 20+ minutes.

The good news: this will only happen the first time you sync. Afterwards, you will only transfer any new books you've purchased since your last sync unless you sign out of the app, in which case the eReader will repeat the above process. We recommend that you do not sign out of the app as this could be very time consuming when you have many books in your library.

Loading personal documents on the Kobo eReader +

The Kobo eReader supports PDF and ePub files. You can add your own PDF documents to your Kobo eReader by connecting your eReader to your computer using the supplied USB cable. The eReader will become available as a removable storage device and you can then drag-and-drop your PDF files onto the eReader.

If you have an external SD card (up to 4 GB), you can load PDFs on that, insert it into your eReader and your eReader will automatically detect new content.

- Hide
Deleting books and files from the Kobo eReader +

You cannot delete books from your personal 'My eLibrary' but you can delete them from your Kobo eReader. For ePub and PDF documents that you loaded onto the device, simply connect your eReader to your PC or laptop and remove the files manually.

If you delete an eBook from your eReader by accident you can always download it again from your ‘My eLibrary’.

The Kobo eReader comes with a usb cable which can be connected to your computer and will also be able to be charged using any mini-USB adapter such as those that come with iPhone or Blackberry devices.

If the battery has been completely drained, a full charge will take between 2 and 3 hours.

Reading on a Kobo eReader +

Just like a real book, you will need a source of light to read using a Kobo eReader as there is no backlight on the screen. Apart from that you can read them pretty much anywhere, and can even take them through airport security. If you are flying you can read during the flight but you should follow passenger guidelines regarding the use of electronic devices during take-off and landing and it is recommended that you do not use the Bluetooth wireless transfer feature during the flight.

- Hide
