Oh, Bridget!

An excerpt from my blog as I work my way through all of Whitcoulls' Top 100 books - www.intelligentink.wordpress.com

A charming, if easy read I think I will be able to cross this one off tonight! Bridget Jones Easily identifiable, even to a married 25 year old who is not really in the same boat, in many respects. I think the diary format takes you in a bit, as well as her endearing honesty that this scheme permits; she admits stuff that we would never normally share ourselves, but which we unequivocally feel at times.
The self-help content that her and her friends explore is interesting and in a womans world plagued with the quest for perfection it is comforting to know our heroine is constantly seeking and grappling with this too. That said, I did learn about dry skin brushing, so veered off on a tangent to look that up and see if it was purely a fictional construct. (It is indeed, not and I intend to give it a try!)
The book is obviously the plight of a 30-something singleton, surrounded by a whole bunch of smug marrieds and many times Bridget dreams of a swing back in power, giving the single girls lifestyle the upper hand. It did make me wonder if the balance has switched somewhat now though We do live in a society that glamourises the lifestyle of young singles and truth be told, gives marriage a pretty bad rap there are some dreary stereotypes in existence. Maybe it is simply a case of the grass is always greener, wanting what we cant/dont have (Except for me! Im a very content married not a smug one though! Urgh!)
Lastly, it is a strange experience to be reading the book when I have already seen the movie (at least twice!) I cant help but picture Renee Zellweger, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth in these roles. It doesnt so commonly happen that my consumption of a book takes place after the movie, but I think there are a few of those in store for me during this challenge
And now, I will get down to finishing it and assess the pile awaiting by my bed to choose my next delicacy to sink my teeth into.- LikeBe the first to like this review
