This title is a Joan's Pick.
Tom Scott is a national treasure. His wit, intellect, fearlessness and glorious cartooning skills are well known to us all, and they're all at play in this extraordinary memoir, which also tells the story of a man whose father could never love him, and who were unreconciled to the end.
It's brave, sad, and hilarious in equal measure and made me laugh until I cried, and then made me sad until I cried. It's also a brilliant trip down a political memory lane, filled with big names and personalities - for those of you who remember, the Muldoon years are here - but so too is the great friendship he established with Sir Edmund Hillary - and loads else besides. We've always known that Tom could write - well, this is simply exceptional. I think it's the best New Zealand memoir of the year. Joan.
