This title is a Joan's Pick.
This book is a force of nature. It has a brutal beauty - in reading about young Julia Alveston and her life with her loving, violent, misguided, survivalist father Martin, you think that it can't possibly get any worse. And then it does.
But the derelict world they inhabit is brilliantly formed. Essential equipment - guns - are carefully looked after when people are not. Martin clearly cares for Julia (or Turtle, or Kibble, as she's also known) - but not in ways that most of us would understand.
This is desperate, and stunning, and an extraordinary piece of writing. It's simply one of the most brilliant books I've read this year. Joan.
