This title is a Joan's Pick.
Jeannette Walls and her siblings are the children of maverick, unconventional parents and their upbringing was unusual, to say the least.
Their father was a dreamer with big plans, who would make the family "do the skedaddle" when things got too hot; their mother was a free spirit, a self described "excitement addict" who preferred to be creative rather than raise a family, and the kids grew up in what most of us would think of as less than ideal circumstances.
As an adult, Jeannette's address became a swanky Park Avenue apartment, while her parents - who followed her to NYC - lived homeless on the streets.
Their lives make fascinating reading. This is a remarkable story about survival, and ending up a long way from where you started, and I loved it. Joan.
