This title is a Joan's Pick.
O boy o boy - this is a book about slavery in the American south, and whilst it's not for the fainthearted, it tells a story that's unfamiliar to many of us today and seem... s unfathomable now. Specifically, it's about Cora and Caesar who decide to escape the cotton plantation which owns them, and use what was known as the Underground Railroad to make a break for freedom. The consequences of failure just don't bear thinking about - but Cora is resolute, and fearlessly brave.
There's a great deal of both good and evil in this book - from the bravery of the whites who operate the Underground Railroad, (a sort of French Resistance of the abolition era), to the appalling bigotry of other, less liberal folk; to the vile occupation of slavecatcher, enshrined in law.
This book confronts some of the worst beliefs and behaviours known to man, and it's full of fear and courage in equal measure. I think Colson Whitehead has done a remarkable thing, bearing witness all these years later and giving us something so terrible, with so much compassion and insight. This book will leave its mark. Joan.
